1. The Nurse Extern Program is a nine-week program at UofL Hospital.
2. Program Dates: May 17 to July 17, 2021
3. The Nurse Extern must commit in advance to all nine weeks.
4. Upon completion of the program, nurse externs will be honored at a celebration and receive certificates of completion.
5. Successful nurse externs may hire on in a permanent per diem (PRN) role as they complete nursing school.
    

Applicants must:

1. Be actively enrolled in an accredited school of nursing program
2. Maintain a 3.0 GPA with an anticipated graduation date prior to June 2022
3. Be able to meet UofL Hospital job-related requirements
4. Be certified in BLS for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association
5. Work 40 hours during Week 1, and commit to 24 hours during weeks 2-9
6. Not be contracted to another facility following graduation
    

Upon completion of the program, the nurse extern will:

1. Demonstrate increased proficiency in clinical skills
2. Develop time management and organizational skills necessary as a professional nurse
3. Grow in understanding the role of the professional nurse
4. Gain self-confidence in the role of the professional nurse
    

Nurse Externs will have the opportunity to:

1. Work one-on-one with a RN, performing the duties of the professional nurse
2. Learn about assessments, medication administration, charting standards, and clinical reasoning
3. Receive PRIORITY job placement upon graduation
    

Applications will be accepted Dec. 1, 2020 – Jan. 31, 2021. Successful applicants will submit:

1. A cover letter and resume
2. An official or unofficial transcript
3. Two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty
